Unit reflection by Titus (1035 0693)

The use of blog in learning is new to me, I can know about the course’s information without face-to-face interaction. It is convenient that everyone could join together when there is discussion on topic is held. We could also find more of relevant information to the topic as we could asset to the internet isochronally. The interactive of blog help us to experience an indifference of learning, since we can study without physically interaction.

When talking about the cyborg, I do agree that I am a cyborg. It is obviously that everyone is the cyborg in the modern age. For example, we asset to the internet in habit, when it is at the past, Wi-Fi service is not always a must in pubic area, but we can observe that people use iphone or ipad to online. ‘Plugged’ is a need to every urban people. We may argue that the power of networld, cyberspace is now a new platform for people to discover and explore. We are not naturally live in the world. The constructed space-cyberworld, it is more attractive and interesting to modern age people. To me, I also used to ‘plug in’ the cybersapce. I need to search information for doing homework and communicate with family member who goes abroad. As we can now easy to go globe by internet, it is a problem to those who cannot asset the net. The ‘Unplugged’ is isolated and outdated in our society, they are localized and lonely. So there is a divide in between the ‘plugged’ and ‘unplugged’.

In this course, we have discussed about some of the issue which is about our ‘self’ in the modern age. There is endless of new technology at every day.The newest of technology influences our life and makes our world difference. So, our embodiment in posthuman world is different than before. There is the blurring of boundaries between biology, culture and technology. Biology is not the opposite side to culture. ‘Thought’ is a much broader cognitive function depending for its specificities on the embodied form enacting it, we are now using our brain in identifies the environment, beside of the physical interaction. I think it is interesting that our society is changed. It is now more emphasize on our intellect, our brainpower. We need to practice as an intellectual; because it is the rule in living at the modern age.

Unit Reflection by Wu Hiu Tung, Jodie (10380807)

It is a first time and the first unit that I have to submit most of the assignments in the blog online. Actually, the way of using blog to submit homework made me more interested in the unit. I believe that many of us have an experience to use blogging before. We are free to type anything in blog and we just think and type like writing a dairy. Therefore, blogging provided a platform for all of us to voice out ourselves and link any interesting relevant website or photo here freely. As our course is talking about the interaction and tight relationship between human and technology, the opportunity for us to use the blog for communication definitely help us to think more about the unit. For me, it gave me chances to comment on other’s posts and I think it is very useful for revision since I have to rethink what I have learnt in class and give some useful comments to others. I think the use of blog in this semester has shown our course main purpose- how the technology affect people, which is, in my opinion, increase people’s communication and interaction.

I definitely regarded myself as a cyborg. In my daily life, what I use most is technologies. Computer and mobile phone are the things that I couldn’t live without. Technologies are a part of my life, or I should say, are a part of myself. I cannot imagine what I can do without any technologies. However, this made me to rethink an issue- Are people too rely on technologies nowadays? I believe that if people live without technologies, the operation of the society would stop. People cannot communicate with others immediately or there are no ways to know about international news. As technologies are very important to human, we should treasure and use technology in appropriate ways.

In my opinion, the way of posting homework online is definitely the most liked thing I like in this unit as I think I can post my homework at anywhere and it is very convenience. Also, I am very happy that after each group’s presentation there’s a long time for us to discuss. Discussion is a good way for us to revise the things we learnt immediately. It is a unit that I like so much.

Unit Reflection

The use of blog as a course communication and reflection platform is good as we can freely discuss and post anything that are interesting and related to this course unit. By using this blog, the boundary of geographic distance has been diminished, we can extend the lecture to a virtual space and there is no time limited for learning and discussion with the use of blog. Meanwhile, blog discussion has an advantage that allowed us to have hyper linked to other websites or posting picture here and providing a more concrete discussion to our classmate. Furthermore, as our unit is about cyberspace, a real experience in blog communication would definitely giving us a consideration of the course unit. (such as the issue of race, identity and the concept of friends in cyberspace)

After the course, I regarded myself as a mini-cyborg, as I agreed that I have been relying on technologies to live. From glasses, pen to computer and mobile. Those technologies have changed our daily life and daily model of life. However, I don’t think that I am a completed cyborg, as being a cyborg there should be artificial mechanic parts added on/ inside our body, just like post-human.

This unit gave us a better understanding on cultural, sociological and psychological aspect analysis on cyberspace. The course is close to our daily life activities, for example, online community and our online identity. The examination on these areas can arose the attention from us on how technologies silently keep changing our society.

Course Reflection

When this semester just started, I knew I am going to take a unit of "Self. Net Identity in the Digital Age". At first, I thought it is a course similar to the previous units I had studied, such as Communication Project and Digital Media, which mainly focus on practical aspect of learning how to use some of advanced technological devices and computer programmes. However, my guess was wrong. It is a theoretical subject about ‘cyborg’.

To me, I have no idea about ‘cyborg’. In my impression, I think cyborg is the same with robot which is made of metals and wires, like Gundam. And I think it is only our imagination created in comics and science fictions. Therefore, when I was told we all are cyborgs, I was shocked and thought this is ridiculous. We are human in flesh and blood, how do we relate to cyborg?

After several weeks of learning, I now have a clear understanding on the concept of cyborg. Indeed, we are in the digital age that everywhere is congested with technology and its products. It is no doubt that to say we are cyborgs as we all are pleased to use different kinds of advanced technologies, such as mobile phones and the Internet, and heavily rely on them due to the convenience they bring into our daily life.

Besides, using web blog as a learning platform is appreciated to me. It not only provides a space for us to express and share our views on an issue more freely, but also facilitates our learning. Since the Internet overcomes the restriction on time and geographical boundary, we can access to the web blog in anytime and anywhere for discussion and collecting various ideas among course-mates that makes the learning process to be more effective.

Course Reflection - Michelle

I think the course provided a chance for me to think about how technologies affect our daily life. As we live in the technological era, we rely on the new technologies a lot. People always use a blog to from a virtual community and make friends with other bloggers. But, there is another way to use the blog in this course. We can experience that using a blog as a learning tool. I think it is quite interesting. It is common that we use our mobile phone to surf the Internet, writing a blog as homework is actually combined work and play together because we can do the homework when we had a gathering with friends. And the topic work and play inspired me a lot. In the past, our parents required us to separate work and play in different period of time. But, I think the boundary between these two elements does not exist anymore. People combined them in an unobvious way. It is easy for us to discover people play the game in their mobile phone, NDS or PSP when they are working.

After understanding more about cyborg, I will regard myself as a cyborg. The first reason is that I wear contact lens. Since contact lens is not something natural, it is made by technologies. I combined some artificial elements in my body. Thus, I can be defined as a cyborg. However, I think cyborg is not simply defined as the mixture of human and robot. From the last reading that written by Hayles, she argues that cyborg is seen as a construction that participates in distributed cognition dispersed throughout the body and the environment. Thus, the environment is another key factor to regard ourselves as cyblog or not. I think I rely on technologies a lot. For example, if I forgot to bring my mobile phone, it is hard for me to maintain the normal daily life. Because I cannot find my friend as I didn’t remember their phone number. I did not know the news of my friends as I cannot access Facebook. For these reason, I think I am a cyborg as the technologies became a part of my living.

Course Reflection by Eric 10380140

A cyborg never called himself a cyborg because he is already get used to it. In Hong Kong people get onto the internet from everywhere. There is sophisticated internet infrastructure. We lived in a facebook world. Not only for the younger generation but also for the older generation who are always be classified as technologically outdated. Everyone is holding an iphone no matter in public transportation or attending schools lecture. Who could dare to say he is not a cyborg in Hong Kong?

Visit blogs is a good place to look into someone’s opinions as well as their world and values. They use simple phases and wording in communicating ideas. We could learn how somebody look into ones perception on what is happening in the world. How are their responses to war affairs in Middle East? People seldom just copy news articles to their blogs but adding personal comments on the post. Blogs updated timely and easily. Ideas, a laptop and internet access is what we need in composing a new post.

This unit gives us wide freedom and opportunity in discussing what is, and what will be happening on the cyberspace. It’s always feeling good to imagine what is going to happen in the future. However, when we read some academic articles or researching findings, we found the information is sometimes already quite outdated, since the internet grows beyond our information digestions, all the time.

Course Reflection

At first I found the theoretical concepts about cyborgs were abstract and difficult to understand, but after several weeks of learning, I now have a better understanding on this topic.

The daily life we are living nowadays is flooded with information technology. We can have an online platform to communicate with others that there was only offline one in the past. We chat online through social networks; we submit homework online, just like this one, we post our comments and reflections on blog to share among classmates. This is one of the advantages of using blogs as we can share what we have written, discuss and comment for improvement. Even though lecturers who are in overseas, they can also access to students’ works which can help facilitate the learning process. Sometimes students may be shy and don’t dare to response immediately in class, but they can freely express their ideas on blogs. Also, like what we have posted before, eg. the summary of our tutorial presentations, we can comment within a certain period, which is unlike having classes in schools, if students miss the class, they will miss the chance for discussion. But a problem for blogging (well, email as well) is that it is asynchronous that we may not get response immediately and have to wait for the replies.

I consider I am a kind of cyborg without robotic skin, since I am now a person who cannot live without technology, i.e. computer and mobile phone. I rely on the internet quite much, for academics, entertainment and socializing with others. Mobile phone is functioned like a brain for me, since it stores all phone numbers of my friends, that my human brain cannot memorize all of them. :P
